Ben Affleck has been announced to be Christian Bale's successor to play the Dark Knight in Zack Snyder's sequel to Man of Steel.
I personally consider Chris Bale's performance as Batman/Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight Trilogy to be definitive and as one of the best by a leading actor in the superhero movie genre.
Ben Affleck has won Oscars for his work for Best Writing (Good Will Hunting, 1997) and Best Picture (Argo, 2012). He is one of the most talented people of his generation.
Interestingly, Ben also portrayed the Marvel Comics superhero, Daredevil in the poorly received Mark Steven Johnson directed movie in 2003. He is one of the few actors to play characters from both DC and Marvel Comics, along with Halle Berry (Storm in the X-Men movies and Catwoman) and Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern and Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine).
I am not still sure about this casting decision. I am interested to hearing from readers about their thoughts.

I don't think casting matters and I feel any movie that combines Supes and Bats is going to be a disaster. A perfect example of over-egging the celluloid pudding.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gary.
DeleteI agree that a Supes/Bats movie could be a recipe for disaster or a box office smash, depending on who directs the movie. Looking back at Man of Steel, I would say the prospects for this movie do not look promising.

I think its a fantastic choice. For starters, he can bring directing tips to Snyder and possibly even make it a collaborative effort. Anytime that Ben can get behind the camera is usually a good thing.
ReplyDeleteAnd as an actor he is great too. Gigli and Daredevil were a long time ago. Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo are far more recent examples. There was similar backlash when Heath and Craig were chosen as the Joker and Bond, respectively. And we all know how those worked out.
As for the Superman/Batman movie being a failure, I highly doubt it. Man of Steel was fantastic IMO if you take away about 20 minutes of that final action scene. I haven't read the comics either, but apparently some of the best DC stories that have been told are the combined Superman and Batman ones. We shall see in 2015 though!
Thanks Jordan.
DeleteI agree about Ben being a great talent, both in front and behind the camera. He is a definite asset to the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe.
Being a fan of Supes and Bats, I would be delighted if the casting works out well.
I did not like Man of Steel and thought that it was highly influenced by Batman Begins. Henry Cavill was very bland and the special effects were very poorly executed. The movie just lacked the passion and fun that separate great movies from the run-of-the-mill ones churned out by studios in the summer season.
That is just my personal opinion, though.
Thanks again for stopping by.

Honestly I can't decide if this is a good or bad idea. I am hoping that Affleck ends up directing the JLA movie since Sndyer would probably do a poor job with the film.

I am with you on this one, James.
DeleteIt would be great if Affleck directs the Man of Steel sequel as well :)

I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. After all, I heard people had issues when they announced Heath Ledger would play The Joker, and he's considered one of the best Jokers ever.
ReplyDeleteBuuuuuut on the other hand, Daredevil...
Thanks Loveable Freak.
