Supergirl Season 1 Episode 2 "Stronger Together" - Recap and Review

After a smashing pilot episode, Supergirl returns for the sophomore outing.

Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) subjects Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) to intense physical training to ensure that she is in top physical shape in order to shoulder her duties as a Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) agent. She receives information about a ship being on fire. In her eagerness, Kara first uses her freeze breath, then her heat vision and finally her super strength. She seems to succeed, but then disaster strikes. Supergirl's inexperience while applying her superpowers on the ship results in the ship developing cracks along the surface and there is considerable oil spill.

Meanwhile at the Plastino Chemicals plant, we meet our villain-of-the-week: a Hellgrammite. This is an insect-like species that can take the shape of a human being and feeds on DDT that is available in abundance at the chemical plant.

Kara's fiasco in causing the oil spill dampens her confidence considerably. It does not help when her sister, Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) gives her a humbling lesson in physical confrontations. To clear things, Kara was considerably weakened by Kryptonite. But Kara is pissed off with Alex, not realizing that she was just following Hank's orders.

Kara receives some unexpected help from none other than Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart). Using herself as an example, Cat advises that Supergirl should instead start from the basics and build her skills before taking on major assignments/obstacles.

With help from James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) and Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan), Supergirl takes on robbers and practices other street level heroics. Soon, both Kara's self-confidence and the public's confidence in Supergirl starts to soar.

On the villain's front, General Astra (Laura Benanti) is not happy with our Hellgrammite munching on human victims and drawing attention to himself. As a punishment, she orders him to bait Supergirl.

Hank Henshaw and Alex Danvers themselves try to trap the Hellgrammite. Unfortunately, Alex gets kidnapped by the villain. Supergirl locates Alex using her super-hearing senses.

Kara Zor-El faces off against her aunt, Astra. Though she is able to use the lesson learnt from Alex against Astra, it is Hank Henshaw who saves the day by attacking Astra with a dagger shaped Kryptonite weapon.

A subplot involves Cat Grant forcing James Olsen to arrange an interview with Supergirl. Though Kara is reluctant at first, she finally decides to do the interview.

Now for the most interesting part in the episode: Hank Henshaw's eyes glowed red for a few seconds during the closing moments. According to Wikipedia, Hank Henshaw is Cyborg Superman, a supervillain.

I am hoping that it turns out that it is Martian Manhunter/J'onn J'onzz, who is disguised as Hank Henshaw. Martian Manhunter (MM) is an alien from Mars and has red glowing eyes. Phil Morris made a great MM on Smallville.

It would be logical that MM would be heading the DEO. MM being a CIA agent also make sense, since he has been a police detective in the Canon.

Martian Manhunter is one of my favorite DC characters and also one of the most criminally underrepresented when it comes to DC Comics based adaptations. Besides, he has some of the coolest superpowers in the Comic Book Universe.

3. An incident on 5th and “Siegel” - Reference to Jerry Siegel, who created Superman (along with artist Joe Shuster)
4. Another incident on “Donner” Avenue - Reference to Richard Donner, who directed the 1978 Superman movie
5. Supergirl saving “Kitten” Fluffy from a tree - Hilarious send-up of the famous kitten rescue by the late Christopher Reeve's Superman
6. James Olsen being referred to as Superman's Pal
7. Alex refers to Superman's Fortress of Solitude
8. The hologram representation of Kara Zor-El's mother, Alura Zor-El - Similar to how Jor-El was show interacting with Kal-El in the 1978 Superman movie

As a fan of Superman and Richard Donner's movie, I enjoyed these nods very much.

Yet another villain, Maxwell Lord (Peter Facinelli) makes his appearance. His comments about the maintenance budget of Metropolis due to Superman's presence was a good and honest commentary on the cost of having a superhero around.

Kara Danvers' explanation of her insignia “S” as being standing for El mayarah - which in Krypton language means “Stronger Together”. It was a nice contrast between Alura and Astra vs Kara and Alex, who are stronger by having each other's back.

In another similarity to Arrow, the episode featured a flashback scene to Krypton. Kara Zor-El  remembers a conversation she had with her mother, Alura about the latest alien criminal who had been apprehended.

Trivia
The song “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar plays during the scene in which Supergirl is fighting the robbers.

Supergirl Season 1 Pilot Episode 1 - Recap and Review

The latest DC Comics based TV show from the creative team of Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg looks set to continue their astounding run of success. Starring Melissa Benoist as the titular character, Supergirl confirms that the successes of Arrow and The Flash were no flashes in the pan.

The show re-imagines Kara Zor-El's origin story as being sent right after Kal-El in order to protect him on the alien environment of Earth. But Kara's pod gets stuck in the Phantom Zone and when she finally makes it to our planet, 24 years have passed by. Kal-El is now known as Superman and has adopted the secret identity of Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter at the Daily Planet.

Superman rescues Kara and introduces her to her foster parents: Jeremiah Danvers (Dean Cain) and Eliza Danvers (Helen Slater). They have a biological daughter, Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh). Alex and Kara hit it off right away and look out for each other.

A grown up Kara Danvers works at Catco Worldwide Media, a media conglomerate in National City. Her colleague, Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) is an alien conspiracy theorist and has an unrequited crush on her.

Kara's boss is Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), an insufferable and tough-as-nails lady. She shouts orders at Kara just as Perry White would at Clark Kent. The parallels continue further. Daily Planet's James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) takes Lois Lane's place at Catco. Winn Schott is the nerd here, subbing for Jimmy Olsen himself at the Daily Planet.

Kara reveals her powers to the world, when the plane carrying Alex develops problems mid-air. She also reveals her secret to Winn, who promptly sets to work on her costume. Cat, for her part, is presumptuous enough to come up with the name: Supergirl.

Supergirl is “abducted” by agents of a top-secret government agency, headed by Hank Henshaw (David Harewood). One of his agents is none other than Alex Danvers herself. Turns out that Alex was the target when her flight was sabotaged by unknown conspirators. 

Hank is suspicious of Kara's powers. Kara gets to test her powers again, when she is summoned by Vartox (Owain Yeoman) for an one-on-one confrontation. Vartox is a fellow Kryptonian and works for The Commander (Faran Tahir). Vartox was behind the attack on Alex and is determined to get Supergirl out of the way.

Vartox physically bests Supergirl and is about to finish her off, when Alex arrives in time to save her. Realizing that she does not have the brawn to beat Vartox, Supergirl uses her brains (and heat vision) to defeat him.

This was a good pilot and promises a bright future for the show. The casting is spot on for the most part. Melissa is excellent as Supergirl, combining the innate goodness and charm of Superman (as the late Christopher Reeve did so memorably). Her bumbling act as Kara is a bit too reminiscent of Tina Fey's character from the show 30 Rock. I felt that Tina overacted and her character came across as irritating than innocent, as was probably intended. Hopefully, Melissa will improve as the series progresses.

David Harewood makes a strong impression despite his limited screen time. I look forward to more of him in the upcoming episodes.

Rest of the cast is adequate in their roles. The only exception is Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen. Mehcad looks too self-absorbed and comes off more as a self-concious male model. He does not appear to get in character as James Olsen. An intelligent girl (like Kara) would probably find him obnoxious in real life, but I guess since this is a fictitious world...

I enjoyed the jab at Bill O'Reilly.

There are a couple of cameos that continue the DC tradition of casting former actors from the DC Universe: Dean Cain and Helen Slater. Dean played the Man of Steel in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, the TV series that aired from 1993 - 97. Helen Slater played Supergirl in the 1984 movie of the same name.

Fans of DC Comics will remember that the late Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder had cameos in Smallville. Adam West made a guest appearance as The Gray Ghost on Batman: The Animated Series.

More recently, Mark Hamill (Joker in Batman: The Animated Series) played The Trickster in The Flash. John Wesley Shipp who plays Barry Allen's father, himself was the Scarlet Speedster in the short-lived TV series The Flash (1990-91). Interestingly, Shipp voiced Professor Zoom in an episode in Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

The airplane rescue that Kara performs and unintentionally makes her presence known to the world is a regular staple of Superman adaptations. In Superman: The Animated Series, Superman's rescue of a flight makes him an overnight sensation. In the 2006 movie, Superman Returns, after being gone from the Earth for five years, Brandon Routh's Superman again comes into the limelight by saving the plane carrying Lois Lane.

In addition, the manner in which Vartox communicates with Supergirl using a frequency that only she can hear reminded me of the 1978 movie: Superman. Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor spoke to the late Christopher Reeve's Superman in a similar way. This was a nice tip of the hat to the seminal movie, that marked the birth of the Superhero movie genre.

Another piece of trivia: Owain Yeoman (who played the hulking villain in this episode) portrayed Cromartie, yet another physically imposing antagonist in the pilot episode of another show: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

The show (understandably) has some similarities to Arrow and The Flash. In both of these shows, the heroes have a supporting team giving them directions and advice. Here too, Supergirl has her sister Alex and presumably, the other agents to give her guidance.

As a fan of the DC Universe in general, and of Superman in particular, I enjoyed this episode very much. I loved his brief appearance in the show, especially his flight as he leaves the Danvers. Not to be outdone, Kara too uses her super powers throughout the episode. First, when she uses her super hearing powers to predict Cat Grant's impending arrival and later, when she uses her X-ray vision to view Alex in her apartment. Superman (and Supergirl) has some of the coolest powers of any Superhero and this show seems to be well aware of that fact.

The Flash Season 2 Episode 4 "The Fury of Firestorm" - Recap and Review

After a somewhat boring episode 2, the series returns to its former glory with a great episode. Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber) is not doing well, now that Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) is gone after sacrificing his life.

Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) has two potential replacements in mind: Henry Hewitt (Demore Barnes) and Jefferson 'Jax' Jackson (Franz Drameh). The two people could not be more different - Henry is an egotistic and ambitious scientist while Jax is a laid-back and self-effacing mechanic. Guess who will eventually replace Ronnie?

Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) is in favor of Jax and Caitilin prefers Henry, since he happens to be a scientist too. However, Jax is reluctant and this helps Henry Hewitt get the first shot at becoming the fire-spouting superhero. Hewitt is disappointed when he is unable to successfully merge with Dr Stein.

There are numerous subplots in this episode. Patty Spivot (Shantel VanSanten) informs Barry that she believes that a shark has been seen walking on land. Barry is skeptical of this fact.

Francine West (Vanessa Williams), the ex-wife of Detective Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), reveals that she is dying of a fatal illness. She wants to spend time with her daughter, Iris West (Candice Patton) before she passes away.

To top it all, Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) seems to be back....

As I had remarked in my review of the first episode “The Man Who Saved Central City”, Victor Garber makes a great Dr. Martin Stein. He brings warmth and humor to the role. This episode benefits greatly by focusing on Dr Stein.

Both Demore Barnes and Franz Drameh are excellent as Henry Hewitt and Jefferson 'Jax' Jackson respectively.

The other crucial aspect is the growing affection that Barry feels for Patty Spivot. This almost costs him his life, when he is ambushed by the hulking Killer Shark as he is admiring Patty from afar. Patty tries to save Barry by shooting at the behemoth but bullets have no effect on him. A stranger steps up just in time to save the day. He turns out to be none other than Harrison Wells himself.

Speaking of Killer Shark, he is more of a DC Universe supervillain rather than being more of a Flash archenemy like the Reverse Flash or Captain Cold or Gorilla Grodd. Fans of DC Comics based adaptations would remember seeing an animated version of King Shark (voiced by John DiMaggio) in Batman: Assault on Arkham (B:AoA). B:AoA is by the way, hands down one of the best DC Universe Animated Original Movies and is definitely worth a look.

The episode also featured strong aspects of horror. In addition to the Killer Shark, the transformed Franz Drameh as Firestorm sports ghostly white eyes. As a fan of the horror genre, I enjoyed these touches.

On the acting front, most of the cast members score well. The exception would be Candice Patton who goes a bit overboard as Iris West in her scene with her mother, Francine West.

Shantel VanSanten is shaping up to be a strong presence as Patty Spivot. After watching her character in the season opener, I was not sure if she would be an ally or a foe for Flash. This episode gives ample evidence that Patty Spivot may be more than what meets Barry's eyes. She is the one who provides him the information about a walking shark man. It is when Barry comes to watch her that Killer Shark attacks him. This made me think that Zoom had sent her to help ambush the Flash. I am curious to see if my hunch proves to be right...

The Flash Season 2 Episode 1 "The Man Who Saved Central City" - Recap and Review

The Season 2 opener starts with a quick recap of the first season: Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) develops powers of superspeed as a result of the explosion at S.T.A.R. Labs. His mentor, Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) turns out to be the villainous Reverse Flash/Zoom. Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) sacrifices his life in order to stop Reverse Flash from killing Flash.

In Season one's cliffhanger ending, Flash is seen racing to save the city from destruction. Turns out that the real hero of the day was Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell). Come to think of it, the fiances of both Iris West (Candice Patton) and Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) lost their lives (willingly) to save Barry Allen.

In the present day, Barry faces a new challenge in the form of the imposing Al Rothstein (Adam Copeland). This menacing fellow has super strength, can increase his height greatly and absorbs energy.

Right when the Central City Mayor is about to felicitate Flash on Flash Day, Rothstein arrives and easily bests Barry in their first confrontation. Flash blames himself for Ronnie's death and withdraws onto himself.

Detective Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) convinces Barry to stop feeling guilty and to take help from others. Flash's usual support team of Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) and Caitlin Snow has a new addition: Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber).

Dr Martin proves his credentials by naming the new villain “Atom Smasher”. Cisco is instantly impressed. Not to be left behind, Cisco designs a Flash-Signal, after having read about such signals in some comic books.....

This time, Flash is able to beats Atom Smasher by overpowering him with too much energy in a power plant.

In a secondary plot, Harrison Wells releases a video in which he confesses to have murdered Barry's mother, Nora Allen (Michelle Harrison). Barry is able to secure the release of his jailed father, Henry Allen (John Wesley Shipp).

Throughout the episode, a man is seen shadowing Barry and taking his photographs. This stranger turns out to be Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears). As fans of DC Comics will know, Jay is the first Flash. He warns Barry about an impending danger.

This was a strong opening episode to Season 2. The best parts featured Victor Garber's character and his interactions with Cisco. They were funny and the cast enjoys a good chemistry with each other.

Atom Smasher reminded me of Bane in terms of his imposing physicality, mask and the long coat jacket costume. And to top it all was the not-so-subtle reference to the Bat-Signal. As a fan of Batman and the DC Universe, I enjoyed it very much.

BBC Sherlock Canon References - "The Hounds of Baskerville" Season 2 Episode 2

Dear Readers,

It is time for a new post in my favorite series - Canonical References in BBC Sherlock episodes. 

Scripted by Mark Gatiss, this episode is based on the original story: The Hound of the Baskervilles.  Here are the references to Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories:

1. Sherlock makes his entrance at 221 B Baker Street with a harpoon and blood all over himself. A surprised John asks him: “You went on the Tube like that?” - In the original story, The Adventure of Black Peter, Dr Watson notes that Sherlock Holmes “strode into the room, his hat upon his head and a huge barbed-headed spear tucked like an umbrella under his arm.” Dr John Watson asks Holmes: “Good gracious, Holmes!....You don't mean to say that you have been walking about London with that thing?” 

2. In the next scene, at 221 B Baker Street, Sherlock is seen walking around impatiently, while holding the harpoon.  - Dr John Watson mentions in The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans:  “..my comrade's impatient and active nature could endure this drab existence no longer. He paced restlessly about our sitting-room in a fever of suppressed energy, biting his nails, tapping the furniture, and chafing against inaction.”

3. Sherlock asks John: “Nothing?” referring to the newspapers that John is reading – In The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans, Sherlock Holmes asks Dr John Watson: “Nothing of interest in the paper, Watson?” 

4. John replies to Sherlock's above question: “Military coup in Uganda....another photo of you with the (deerstalker)... Cabinet re-shuffle”. Sherlock responds: “Nothing of importance! Oh, God!” – In The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans, Dr John Watson writes: “I was aware that by anything of interest, Holmes meant anything of criminal interest. There was the news of a revolution, of a possible war, and of an impending change of government; but these did not come within the horizon of my companion. I could see nothing recorded in the shape of crime which was not commonplace and futile. Holmes groaned and resumed his restless meanderings.”

5. A frustrated Sherlock Holmes starts looking around desperately for drug/artificial stimulant(s): “John, I need some. Get me some!” – In The Adventure of the Yellow Face, Dr John Watson writes about Sherlock Holmes: “Save for the occasional use of cocaine, he had no vices, and he only turned to the drug as a protest against the monotony of existence when cases were scanty and the papers uninteresting.”

6. Sherlock tries to bribe John into getting his some cocaine: “I will let you know next week’s lottery numbers” – Reference to Watson’s gambling habit as mentioned in this exchange from The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place - Sherlock Holmes: “By the way, Watson, you know something of racing?” Dr Watson: “I ought to. I pay for it with about half my wound pension.”

7. Sherlock refers to his “secret supply” while searching his slippers – In The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual, Dr Watson writes about Sherlock Holmes' habits: “...But with me there is a limit, and when I find a man who keeps his cigars in the coal-scuttle, his tobacco in the toe end of a Persian slipper... then I begin to give myself virtuous airs. ”

8. Mrs Hudson’s reaction to Sherlock’s (seemingly childish) fascination with the harpoon: “How about a nice cuppa? And perhaps you could put away your harpoon” – In A Study in Scarlet, when Stanford introduces Dr Watson to Sherlock Holmes, Holmes is working on a chemical experiment. Dr Watson writes about Holmes' enthusiasm about his discovery: “ "Ha! ha!" he cried, clapping his hands, and looking as delighted as a child with a new toy.”

9. Sherlock responds to Mrs Hudson: “I need something stronger than tea. Perhaps 7 percent stronger” – In The Sign of the Four, Dr Watson gets angry with Sherlock Holmes for using drugs and asks him whether he took morphine or cocaine on that particular day. Holmes responds: “It is cocaine,....a seven-per-cent solution.”

10. Sherlock’s deduction about Mrs Hudson’s recent activities by observing the flour on her sleeves and tiny foils on her thumbnail – In A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes explains about the Science of Deduction and Analysis: “By a man's finger nails, by his coat-sleeve, by his boot, by his trouser knees, by the callosities of his forefinger and thumb, by his expression, by his shirt cuffs—by each of these things a man's calling is plainly revealed.”

11. Sherlock correctly recognizes the perfume being worn by Mrs Hudson as “Casbah Nights” and advises her to read his blog on the identification of perfumes – Reference to this line from The Hound of the Baskervilles: “There are seventy-five perfumes, which it is very necessary that a criminal expert should be able to distinguish from each other, and cases have more than once within my own experience depended upon their prompt recognition.”

12. Sherlock's remark about his mind: “Mine’s like an engine, racing out out of control… A rocket, tearing itself to pieces trapped on the launch pad... I need a case!” – In The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge, Sherlock Holmes tells Watson: “My dear Watson, you know how bored I have been since we locked up Colonel Carruthers. My mind is like a racing engine, tearing itself to pieces because it is not connected up with the work for which it was built.”

13. John retorts: “You have just solved one! By harpooning a dead pig, apparently” - Reference to the plot of The Adventure of Black Peter in which Sherlock Holmes solves the mystery behind the murder of Captain Black Peter.

14. Sherlock expresses his anger and frustration at being asked by a prospective client to find her missing rabbit “Bluebell” – In The Adventure of the Copper Beeches, Sherlock Holmes complains to Dr Watson about a letter he receives from Violet Hunter:  “As to my own little practice, it seems to be degenerating into an agency for recovering lost lead pencils and giving advice to young ladies from boarding-schools. I think that I have touched bottom at last, however. This note I had this morning marks my zero-point, I fancy.”

15. Sherlock switches off Henry's TV interview and asks Henry Knight to repeat the story. Sherlock's reason: “I prefer to do my own editing” – In the Canon, Sherlock Holmes often asks clients to repeat their case history to Holmes and Dr Watson, despite the availability of other sources of information.

In The Adventure of the Red-Headed League, Sherlock Holmes tells his client, Jabez Wilson: “I ask you not merely because my friend Dr. Watson has not heard the opening part but also because the peculiar nature of the story makes me anxious to have every possible detail from your lips”

In A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes makes a similar request to John Rance, the police constable. When John protests that he has already filed a police report, Holmes offers him a half-sovereign as an incentive and explains: “We thought that we should like to hear it all from your own lips...... Just let us hear it all in your own way as it occurred.”

16. Sherlock interrupts Henry when the latter is describing Dartmoor's beauty: “It is an amazing place. It is like nowhere else...It’s sort of black but beautiful.” Sherlock's response: “Hmm. Not interested, moving on.” – In The Adventure of the Retired Colorman, Sherlock Holmes sends Dr John Watson to collect information about Josiah Amberley. Dr Watson returns and explains about Josiah's house: “You know that particular quarter, the monotonous brick streets, the weary suburban highways. Right in the middle of them, a little island of ancient culture and comfort, lies this old home, surrounded by a high sun-baked wall mottled with lichens and topped with moss, the sort of wall...”. Holmes' angry response: “Cut out the poetry, Watson...I note that it was a high brick wall.”
