Cushing happens to be one of my favorite actors too - so humane and always watchable.

I too am not a fan of the recent adaptations. They take too many diversions from the Canon. If you did not enjoy the Guy Ritchie movies and the BBC series, then most likely you will not like Elementary at all. It's a lot of fun!

As for the others, my favorite European version is the Granado series with Jeremy Brett and David Burke/Edward Hardwicke (especially the latter, who exudes wisdom and compassion). The BBC Sherlock is okay (I thought "A Study in Pink" was splendid, but I felt the series got too gimmicky later on and I disapprove of their "high functioning sociopath" concept of Holmes). I'm not a fan of the Guy Ritchie movies at all - the actors are good but the stories are badly written. I haven't seen "Elementary" yet, so I reserve judgement. Honorable mention goes to Basil Rathbone, of course, and to Ronald Howard's gentle, cheerful Holmes; and to Peter Cushing - one of my top favorites actors ever - wish he had made more!Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499657162378475617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179127695106064318.post-1225605516314433142020-12-19T11:20:55.181+05:302020-12-19T11:20:55.181+05:30I know this is an old post, but I just discovered ...I know this is an old post, but I just discovered this 2013 Sherlock Holmes series. I didn't expect much, trying it out on a whim, but I ended up being so impressed. I absolutely agree that Andrei Panin portrays one of the best Watsons in film history. I don't think we've ever seen so much emphasis placed on Watson's backstory as a doctor and soldier before. We've definitely never seen a Watson who actually seems to think like a doctor before - he offers medical advice, takes and prescribes medicines, performs surgeries, etc. He's neither weak nor stupid - I was delighted with the boxing lessons and his struggle to become a successful writer (I relate, lol). And I love how the series highlights how different he and Holmes are. Despite how very Russian some of the costumes and settings feel, and how quirky and emotional this Holmes is, I felt like I was getting fresh insight into the original characters. You can see the curiosity each has for the other and the growing respect they share as time goes on. I also love how they weave different original stories into a new story - you get a fresh story but you can still enjoy the little inside jokes that touch on the originals. I was very sorry to hear to Andrei Panin's death, and I don't blame them for not replacing him. Without him the series wouldn't be the same at all.Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499657162378475617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179127695106064318.post-30682808887721989902020-12-19T11:20:45.061+05:302020-12-19T11:20:45.061+05:30I know this is an old post, but I just discovered ...I know this is an old post, but I just discovered this 2013 Sherlock Holmes series. Another thing about this episode that has bugged me: When Sherlock and John are talking to Soo Lin Yao (Gemma Chan) and her brother arrives to kill her, the best thing that they could have done is to be with her. Or at least one of them could have been with her, while the other goes to stop her brother. Instead, both leave her alone and she ends up dead.

Not a bright thing to do, but I guess Moffat and Gatiss did not care or that is what they thought would best serve the plot.

Arun.Arunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16498276962097853996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179127695106064318.post-23891155006642126092020-10-24T11:24:39.557+05:302020-10-24T11:24:39.557+05:30There are several things I didn't get: if the ...There are several things I didn't get: if the banker knew they were after the hairpin (because he knew the code) why didn't he take it back from his secretary?
Also, why did the gang kill him (and the other smuggler) so fast?
